Galvanised pipe dimensions

  • 40 Nominal Bore/ 48 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness ranges from 2.3- 3.6 mm
  • 50 Nominal Bore /60 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness ranges from 2.3- 3.6 mm
  • 65 Nominal Bore /76 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness ranges from 3- 5.4 mm
  • 80 Nominal Bore /89 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness ranges from 3- 5.4 mm
  • 90 Nominal Bore /100 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness ranges from 3.5 – 4 mm
  • 100 Nominal Bore /114 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness ranges from 2.6- 5.4 mm
  • 125 Nominal Bore /140 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness ranges from 3.6 to 5.4 mm
  • 150 Nominal Bore /165 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness ranges from 4 to 5 mm

We use standard wall thickness for our bollards from 4 – 5mm but some manufacturers may use lighter walled to save money- make sure you ask what you’re getting as it determines the strength of your bollard.

Black steel and mild steel

  • 168 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness 4.8 mm Black Pipe – must be galvanised
  • 200 mm Mild Steel * See notes below ( not available in carbon steel)
  • 219 mm Outside Diameter – wall thickness 4.8 mm Black Pipe – must be galvanised

In general, steel is referred to as ‘Carbon Steel’ where the main alloying component used is Carbon. IE:  Carbon Steel has a higher amount of carbon. Mild steel has a relatively low tensile strength, but it is cheap and easy to form. Low-carbon steel contains approximately 0.05–0.25% carbon making it malleable and ductile.

Some common problems

  1. 60 mm or 50 mm : One of the most confusing issues is 60 mm O.D  (outside diameter) often referred to as 50 mm N.B. (50 Nominal Bore). As 60 mm diameter is often refrred to as 50 mm, many companies try to pass off a 48 mm for 60 OD.

  2. 150 or 165 mm: If your architect has specified 150 mm bollards in Galvanised Steel this means 150 Nominal Bore, or 165 mm Outside Dimension (come in several different wall thicknesses. The most common being 4- 5 mm wall thickness). Refer to sizes below.

  3. carbon-table165 or 168 mm: If your architect has specified 168 mm Galvanised steel please note Galvanised steel does not come in 168 mm diameter. You can buy black steel and have it galvanised (but it is going to be far more expensive for the same results).It is very hard to tell the difference between 168 mm Bollards and 165 mm bollards (it’s 3 mm circumference which equates to about 1m to the eye). Before forking out lots of money for a 168 bollard check that it is not just a confusion in sizes. Please Note: A 168 galvanised steel bollard with a 3 mm wall thickness will not be as strong as 165 mm diameter with 5 mm wall thickness, and if you are filling it with concrete a 165 x 3 mm wall will suffice.

There is a range of carbon steel “tube” (black pipe- not galvanised) covered by AS 1074 and AS 1579 that also has DN designations for nominal size. There are some differences between these and the ASTM /ASME pipes of the same designation as shown in the table of nominal outside diameters at right. The AS tubes do not have schedules of wall thickness but rather come in Light, Medium and Heavy.


Stainless steel pipe & tube

Tube (light walled) and Pipe (Heavy walled) come in different dimensions and different finishes (refer to buyer’s guide). EG: 150 in Stainless steel, unlike Galvanised steel, is actually 150 mm outside diameter, but this dimension only comes in light walled tube. The closest pipe (heavy duty) diameter is 140 mm. Here are some of the most common dimensions used for bollards in Australia:

  • 60 mm – 3 mm wall  (4 kg)  * Common dimension
  • 73 mm – 3 mm wall  (5.3 kg)
  • 90 mm – 3 mm wall  (6.5 kg)
  • 100 mm – 3 mm wall  (7.5kg)
  • 140 mm – 3.4 mm wall (12 kg)
  • 168 mm – 3.4 mm wall (14 kg)

STAINLESS STEEL TUBE BOLLARDS

  • 63 mm – 1.6 mm wall (2.48 kg)
  • 76 mm – 1.6 mm wall (2.99 kg)
  • 100 mm – 1.6 mm wall (4kg)
  • 150 mm – 1.6 mm wall (6 kg)      * Common dimension

  • 76 mm Outside Diameter –   100 mm Plastic Cover with 7mm gap
  • 89 mm Outside Diameter –   115 mm Cover with 7.5 mm gap
  • 100 mm Outside Diameter – 115 mm cover with 2.5 mm gap
  • 114 mm Outside Diameter – 140 mm Cover with 6 mm gap
  • 140 mm Outside Diameter – 170 mm Cover 10 mm gap
  • 165 mm Outside Diameter – 190 mm Cover with 7.5 mm gap

You can now use any dimension (ie turn a small 76 mm bollard into a fierce looking 150 mm Stone bollard) , by securing your cover using expandable tape

  • 89 mm Outside Diameter –   100 mm Cover with 4 mm gap
  • 140 mm Outside Diameter – 150 mm Cover 3.5 mm gap
